All About Ms. Mays

Hello and Welcome!  My name is Ms. Rashida Mays and I am a third grade teacher at Elmwood Elementary School. I have been a teacher for the Syracuse City School District for 7 years and I have been working at Elmwood Elementary for the last 5 of those years. I attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the first H.B.C.U. ever built, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. I minored in Psychology. While attending Lincoln, affectionately known as L.U. initially, I was not sure what I wanted to major in, I did however love working with children of all ages and it came quite natural. I stayed active and volunteered at the Oxford Y.M.CA. as a youth mentor for troubled teens. We participated in community building exercises, helped teens develop socially and emotionally, and tutored them in the areas of math and reading. This experience was not only beneficial for the teens, it was also beneficial for me! I learned a great deal from them and decided to major in education. We had a phenomenal Education Program at Lincoln and I thought that this career path may be a good fit. After becoming an Education major, I actively participated in the Education Club as well as Kappa Delta Pi. I was in the honor's program and received an annual scholarship toward my tuition.

In addition to being an educator, I am also mother of the year (or I think so anyway) to a beautiful little lady named Tyler. Tyler is an Elmwood Eagle who loves school and playing with friends. She is also active outside of school and enjoys playing soccer for Eastwood and participating in Karate at Masters of Karate. Tyler will be 7 this coming August and going into the 2nd grade. I guess it's true, time flies when you're having fun! We love talking to each other, cracking jokes, and playing with our puppy, Kashi. I believe that is enough about me, now tour the website for some cool information about the 2010-2011 Academic year!
